Saab 9-X Air Car Audio Review

4 seater convertible, driven by a hybrid ethanol / petrol, the 9-X Air concept car Saab is a very endearing. Apart from its design and ecological engine, this convertible is distinguished by its high-tech cockpit, where the unit is replaced by a mobile device!

And if tomorrow the car had no radio?

Audiophiles and car audio enthusiasts will surely have good ceiling, and me included, but this car is not the first we see a car replaced by a smartphone. That said, we must recognize that this step is as logical sez to the general public, which increasingly uses a phone to do everything (phone, internet 3G, portable audio / video, digital cameras, ...). In addition, music dematerialized form of MP3 and other download is booming! So why keep a standard CD radio? Only time will tell. But in the meantime, find the Saab brings a certain freshness in the automotive landscape.

At the center of the center console, a small tray lets slip his mobile phone, PDA or MP3 player

Saab has developed a truly futuristic design in his convertible, a design that reminds us deliciously vehicles Demolition Man (film futurist). No keys, buttons or other controllers, the picture takes a very pure style, with a white finish reminiscent of a block of ice. But how does one use the features of the car? Well not less than 5 video screens are used to give information to the driver (speed, fuel, heating, ...). The screens are of course touch controls. Graphical interfaces adopt a design "Ice Cube" with lighting 3D blue and green.

All controls and gauges all classics are replaced by video screens

To ensure that all information is in the driver's vision, the screens are arranged in an arc around the wheel. For better ergonomics, the driver has a control screen in its door-cons. Among the 5 information screens, one is dedicated to multimedia. In collaboration with Sony Ericsson, the Saab 9-X Air has an interface for Bluetooth connectivity with one or more mobile devices (mobile phone, PDA, ...). The interface allows to broadcast all of the multimedia mobile device: phone book, music and satellite navigation. The portable device can then remain in the drawer in the center console or in the pocket of the driver. We do not need to touch it. All content is managed from the touch screen of the car.

The flywheel keeps a conventional control on these industries for the use of multimedia

The system goes much further. If the mobile phone is sophisticated, it is even possible to remotely control the closing of the doors, hood, or even change the presets of the car. Longer need a key or remote control, it's the phone that contains all the information needed to control the car. Fun, futuristic and very interesting, but still annoying if you lose it or her phone is stolen.

Mobile phones today are more and more devices to do everything, so this kind of use does not seem unrealistic. Still, for car audio enthusiasts, including myself, I am addicted to my car stereo classic. We'll see what the future holds, but it is clear that music dematerialized and mobile devices will become more and more space in our lives. Just look at the possibilities of the iPhone 3G and the enthusiasm it generates! And somewhere, a small device with a few grams, it moves with all our data (phone book, address book browsing, music, video, ...) is still very practical. In any case, it seems increasingly interested carmakers.
