Mazda CX-5, the first car to use high-strength steel

Mazda in collaboration with Sumitomo Metal Industries and Aisin Takaoka has become the first automaker to successfully develop components using high resistance steel - 1,800 MPa -. This super-tough steel will be introduced on the all-new Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV that will begin its worldwide launch in early 2012. This new Mazda production technology uses high-grade steel can ensure controlled deformation under impact. The bumpers are stronger than the 20 percent and are 4.8 kilograms lighter than previous versions and are a fundamental part of Mazda new-generation architecture based on light and extremely rigid. The new architecture of the frame has been developed as part of Mazda's innovative technology SKYACTIV and incorporates a new structure for energy absorption as well as the extensive use of high strength steel to reduce weight.

The use of high-strength steel allows for thinner parts of the vehicle but retain the same degree of resistance. This leads to a significant reduction in weight of the car. Reducing the weight of the bumper beam is particularly important because, since they are embedded in the body structure at the point farthest from the center of gravity, the weight has a noticeable effect on the dynamic performance and responsiveness of the car. These must also be strong to provide sufficient protection in a collision. For these reasons, the method of large-scale production of high strength steel parts has been much sought after. However, more resistant materials are also less flexible and therefore less energy in a collision. To avoid this, Mazda has conducted extensive research on how the beams of the bumpers are deformed in an accident, and has created a new design that absorbs energy more efficiently. In addition, to ensure maximum strength of the CX-5, Mazda has collaborated with Futaba Kogyo Co., Ltd. to optimize the welding techniques and to establish a reliable production process.

Looking to the future, Mazda remains committed to reducing the weight of cars and improving the dynamic performance while maintaining a high level of chassis rigidity and high resistance in case of impact, so as to provide all its customers the unique driving pleasure and excellent performance while respecting the environment and the high level of security.
