Audi A1, the road test

The effect is that of a homogeneous luminous band that follows the "wing", immediately above the direction indicator, located at the bottom.

On request it is possible to match the headlight beam of a health care system. The system detects, using a small camera built into the rearview, the oncoming vehicles from the opposite direction and inserted individually, depending on the momentary situation, the high beam or low beam.

A distinctive element: the arch of the roof
A distinctive element that adds a sporty accent to the sides of the A1 is formed by the arc of the roof. On request, Audi offers the arch of the roof in four colors for those who want to create a contrast with the rest of the body. The arc flows into the rear pillar, even more inclined than in many coupe, enhancing the dynamic aspect of the tail of the car, in itself already reported by the presence of the spoiler lip on the edge of the roof. Regarding the safety of pedestrians in case of investment, standards of Audi surpass the requirements of the law. The radiator fan controlled continuously variable helps to strengthen the efficiency of this construction solution. The A1 glides silently in the wind, thanks to enormous efforts to design and optimization in a wind tunnel. Even the gaskets, crystals and many other details of form combine to improve aerodynamics. The exterior rear-view, thanks to the grooves and the edges accentuated, they also have the function of limiting the fouling of the side, of the side windows and the mirror with the same wet roads.



The interior
Sportiness and precision are the hallmarks of the interior of the A1. The designers have often found inspiration from engineering and aeronautical construction techniques related to it lightly. The instrument panel is elegantly curved, reveals related issues under the wing of a plane, and its horizontal bevel expresses the perfect balance between lightness and solidity. On the front edge are four circular air vents and very pronounced, which recall the features of a jet turbine. Their position can be adjusted by means of a singular kinematic ball.

The engine



Gives the Audi A1 in four different engines. The two TFSI gasoline engines and two TDI cover a power range from 86 hp (63 kW) to 122 hp (90 kW). All engines utilize direct injection and turbocharging. The smaller of the two engines is the 1.2 TFSI. It delivers 86 hp (63 kW) and provides its maximum torque of 160 Nm at a speed between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. The four-cylinder engine, paired to a manual five-speed gearbox, it accelerates the A1 from 0 to 100 in 11.7 seconds, allowing it to reach a top speed of 180 km / h. In the NEDC is satisfied with 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, along which emits 11.8 kg of CO2. The newly developed four-cylinder 1.2-liter engine embodies an exemplary Audi's downsizing philosophy, the technical solution that prefers a turbo increase displacement. In fact, engine needs 1,197 cm3 and two valves per cylinder. During its design is aimed at easing a rational weights. The base of the 1.2 TFSI in molten aluminum has its own cooling circuit separate from that of the head. After starting the water is circulated within the block. The 1.4 TFSI comes with 122 hp (90 kW). The maximum torque of 200 Nm is available constantly from 1,500 and up to 4,000 rpm. Therefore even the most powerful gasoline engine in the range A1 responds promptly in virtually all situations, even at low revs. The engine has a displacement of 1,390 cm3, four valves per cylinder, supercharged by a turbocharger is water cooled.

The 1.4 TFSI with S tronic seven-speed gearbox accelerates the A1 up to 100 km / h in 8.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 203 km / h. Outstanding efficiency: TDI engines
The 1.6 TDI with 1,598 cm3 displacement is characterized by an internal friction minimized. This result stems from the use of a regulated oil pump, the piston rings, the lapping of the sliding rods of the cylinders, to the toothed belt, and finally to the piston pins of aluminum obtained by fusion. Their DLC coating is an advanced technology coming from engineering of racing engines. DLC stands for diamond-like carbon-carbon coating, indicating a fine and hard as a diamond. The second version of the 1.6 TDI, which will be introduced later develops 90 hp (66 kW) and torque of 230 Nm between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. In combination with the five-speed manual transmission accelerates from 0 to 100 in 11.5 seconds.
