New Toyota Auris at Paris Motor Show 2012

Toyota became the first step of the offensive in the heart of European C-segment, the new Auris has now become more modern, dynamic and with more equipment, running costs even lower than in the past. The new Auris reflects the determination by the brand in the construction of vehicles more dynamic and attractive, based on the proven reputation for quality, durability and reliability. The vehicle is designed in a very attractive and confident, interior of exceptional quality, with a remarkable driving enjoyment and greater efficiency for the entire line-up of engines. improvements in terms of aerodynamics, the weight and engine ensures outstanding levels of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions across the range, further lowering the cost of ownership. Toyota is the largest vehicle manufacturer in the C-segment, with 39 million units sold worldwide in over 140 countries by the introduction of the Corolla in 1966.

Designed for the European market, the one with the highest sales volume in the world, the new Auris will be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, where it is already assembled the Avensis,
Toyota reinforcing the commitment in Europe. TMUK is celebrating its 20th anniversary with 3,265,000 units built since 1992. The production of Auris now stands at about 418,000 units.

Despite a total length equal to 4,275 mm, for an increase of 30 mm, the new Auris maintains the same pitch of 2,600 mm of the current model. The overhang front and rear were both  increased by only 15 mm, allowing Auris to remain one of the most compact vehicles in its class. An important detail is that the surface of the front part of Auris was reduced by 4% than that of the current model and the decreased total height of 55 mm (45 mm for the passenger compartment and 10 mm minimum height from the ground), without compromising the space available to passengers. Together, these changes provide significant benefits in terms of aerodynamic, fuel consumption and driving pleasure.

The extensive use of high-strength steel has allowed to reduce the total weight of 40 kg, and this has also allowed the lowering of the center of gravity. The height of the seats has been reduced by 40 mm and the angle of the steering wheel reduced by 2 ° in such a way as to create a driving position more engaging with a lower hip point. The new design of the front seats has allowed the increase of the space for the legs of the rear passengers of 20 mm and 20 mm of the enlargement of the opening of the doors. The length of the cargo space has been increased by 50 mm and the width of the tailgate of 90 mm. Thanks to the greater flexibility of a load floor on 2 levels and rear seats with 60:40 configuration, all variants, including hybrid, offer an increase of load capacity, up to a maximum of 360 liters (wire window).

The new Auris has a dynamic exterior styling and more slender. The agility and dynamism of the new Toyota are immediately visible in the new front lines. The new face of the brand combines design Under Priority grid style Keen Look Headlights and LED daytime running lights (DRL), which can ensure greater dynamism and presence on the road. The design Under Priority is characterized by a wide grid lower trapezoidal inserted inside the front bumper, and by a smaller upper grille that extends for the entire surface that divides the headlights. Immediately below the sinuous line of the bonnet, dominated by the new badge Toyota, broader than the previous and placed in the lowest position, the upper grid has a central horizontal bar chrome that fits into the design of the headlights to accentuate the perception of amplitude vehicle.

Within the clusters of lights, narrower than those installed on the previous model, the horizontal bar is to outline a arched shape that accentuates the connection between the hood and bi-xenon headlights or with halogen lights. The innovative packaging also incorporates headlights LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL). Available as standard on all equipment, emphasize the unique visual signature of the new Auris. The large lower grille is flanked by chrome-ringed fog lamps integral. The grid is coated in paint 'Piano Black' with a chrome accent reserved for the spoiler, which in turn enhances the scope and authority of service of the new Auris.

In profile, the steeply raked windscreen under that joins the roof line, designed to reduce the drag coefficient of aerodynamic styling of the new Auris provides for the extension of the side windows, hours divided into three parts, and a belt line, now even more pronounced. The exterior mirrors have been placed within the crystal, and between the uprights, now in black, stands out the paint 'Piano Black' reserved for the B-pillar. Together with the chrome frame of the waistline, the new treatment of the rear emphasizes the sporty silhouette and elegant vehicle. The height of the new Toyota Auris has been lowered by 10 mm, narrowing the space between the wheel arches and tires and aligning the wheels to the shape of the vehicle, to accentuate the look more sleek and aerodynamic.

The choice of wheels includes steel wheels with wheel covers, 16 "alloy wheels and 15", 16 "and 17". At the rear, the tailgate has a successful mix of concave and convex surfaces. It is dominated
by an integrated spoiler and finished by the new headlamp design, able to enhance the shape of the rear fender and the rear window, as well as to express the strength of the vehicle and emphasize its presence on the road. The new bumper with reflectors on the ends helps to enhance the sporting appearance of the new Auris. The new Auris will be available in a choice of ten exterior colors, four of which are brand new: Grey, Avante-Garde Bronze, Steel and Dark Blue. Pearl White color is rather unique for the full hybrid models.

The new exterior design gives the new generation Auris excellent aerodynamic performance, contributing to stability and to reduce consumption. Beside the lowering of the total height of 55 mm, the reduction of 4% of the front surface has had a significant impact on the reduction of aerodynamic drag. Rising from bonnet line and ascending along the windshield, the new line of the roof goes to join to the rear pillar minimizing any turbulence caused by the airflow along the rear of the vehicle.

Along with the lowering of the height from the ground of 10 mm, the same attention has been paid to ensure maximum uniformity of air flow under the vehicle body, which is characterized by a front spoiler, as coatings for the lower part of the engine, underbody, which together help to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle. The dynamic performance of the underbody are further improved by the placement of vertical fins on the lower floor coatings center and rear, making the airflow under the vehicle more uniform, to ensure maximum stability with higher speeds. The result of all these measures is an aerodynamic drag coefficient Cx reduced from 0.292 to just 0.28 Cd.

Offering more space and greater comfort for passengers, the interior design of the new stresses the importance of perceived quality, which together with the consistency of illumination, colors and finishes ensures a solid feel from a higher segment vehicle. The new design is characterized by bold shapes, by the highest levels of functionality and the extraordinary quality of materials. The instrument panel uses a horizontal design that helps to strengthen the feeling of spaciousness of the interior and ensure a highly ergonomic profile instrumentation and controls for the driver. The design of the bridge is strengthened by the deep curvature of the instrument panel that runs down the side of the center console to focus his gaze around the driver's seat.

The simplicity of the new instrument panel, designed in a very clean set on the presence of two circular instruments and a large digital display, have signs and hands white. The instrument panel and center console are backlit in blue to ensure a premium quality appearance and maximum visual consistency. Offering a strong sense of consistency and quality to new internal frames of the instruments, the central part of the dashboard, the lining of the transmission tunnel, the audio and climate controls and handles are all coated with a silver paint finish.

The vents on the panel of the audio system, the tunnel, steering wheel and shift lever are finished instead with a silver paint. On most valuable productions, the dashboard is finished in leather.

The quality and visual harmony of the new interior is further enhanced by the unique tactile feel of the cabin, with meticulous attention paid to every single material with which passengers can enter Contact. The top surface of the instrument panel and door trim at the shoulders are finished in soft-touch materials, and the uprights are covered with cloth. The shift knob has a new design, while the steering wheel is trimmed in nappa leather of the best quality with seams "like baseball" single. The new seat design, which offers more adjustability (both longitudinal and height), ensures maximum comfort for the occupants.

The seats of the stands Entry and Active are finished in a high quality fabric. The seats of the finest fittings are finished in black velor with leather side panels. The practicality of the interior of the new Auris is emphasized by features extremely versatile and generous cargo spaces. Among them it is worth recalling a storage box, sunglasses holder, hooks, purses, four bottle holders, 4 cup holders, center console sliding armrest for with wallets, stowage compartments for the dashboard and the rear console, 3 sockets from 12 V and AUX input, a removable tray and a rear deck on two levels.

The new Auris range benefits from new levels of rigidity and structural modifications to the  suspension system, steering, driving position and NVH characteristics, to offer customers a driving experience more enjoyable and addictive. The insertion of the new structural elements, for the front frame and the rear and for suspensions have increased the rigidity of the body. The extensive use of high-strength steel during construction has helped to reduce the total weight of 40 kg of the new Auris.

Beside the reduction of the weight, a reduction of 55 mm height of the vehicle, of 10 mm height
and minimum ground clearance of 40 mm of height of the new front seats have made it possible to lower the center of gravity of the
vehicle, further improving the stability to high speed and cornering agility. The lowering of the center of gravity has also allowed the reduction of the levels of rigidity of the suspensions and the diameter of the anti-roll bar, helping to improve the ride comfort, control and responsiveness of the vehicle. Were completed numerous components of the MacPherson front suspension, including the design of the upper support, the spiral spring and shock absorber. The spring rate has been reduced and the shock absorbers developed to combine ride comfort with class-leading stability and excellent steering response.

Models equipped with petrol engine 1.3 L. and diesel 1.4 L. have rear suspension axle  torque, while the 1.6 petrol models L., diesel 2.0 L. and the full hybrid feature double arm swing. The Electric Power Steering (EPS) was in turn improved, with the column today derives benefit from a more rigid anchor that provides a more linear steering response, with a new EPS control designed to minimize reaction to the steering and lower gear ratio to ensure maximum responsiveness to input. Together, these amendments ensure optimum feedback steering and a more responsive, to ensure maximum agility on the road. The significant improvements in the levels of NVH ensure the new Toyota Auris a march extremely comfortable and quiet. The excellent sound insulation reserved to the engine compartment, the front wheel arches and the bridge helps to reduce the noise from the engine and from the street.

In recent years the average emissions of Auris is decreased in a progressive manner. In 2007, the year of the launch
of the first generation, the average stood at 152 g / km. This value of 142 g / km in 2009, it was further reduced to 125 g / km in 2011 after the introduction of the full hybrid. Today, with the launch of the new Auris, the average CO2 emissions is 109 g / km, a further reduction of 13% compared to the average of the outgoing model. All this has been made possible thanks to a 360 ° approach to reducing emissions and improving efficiency, while improving the dynamic performance and driveability. The key to these findings lies in the improvements made to the engine, which today sees the choice between full hybrid variant, two diesel engines and two petrol engines, equipped with the unique Toyota Optimal Drive.

The Toyota Optimal Drive is characterized by a wide range of advanced technologies and improvement programs designed to optimize the balance between performance, driving pleasure, reduced fuel consumption and emissions. These diverse core technologies focus on three key aspects for the development of the engine. In the first place the weight reduction of the engine block, with the use of components and elements of
transmission compact and lightweight. Second, the reduction of mechanical losses through the adoption of Valvematic (a further development of technology VVT-i) for the petrol engine 1.6, a new design of the rocker arm roller, lighter pistons of the two units gasoline, low viscosity oil and a 6-speed manual transmission developed further.

Third, the maximization of the efficiency of combustion, made possible thanks to the adoption of petrol models on a considerably high compression ratio, equal to 11.5:1, the Valvematic, the completion of the intake pipes and the design of the chamber combustion and cooling of the piston by means of oil jet. All new diesel engines provide the benefits of lower compression ratios, optimization of the size of the combustion chamber and the greater efficiency of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). The unit is equipped with petrol 1.3 liter Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) and with a compression ratio considerably higher, equal to 11.5:1, which increases the thermal efficiency of the engine, which generates 73 kW/99 hp and a maximum torque of 128 Nm at 3,800 rpm.

These exceptional dynamic performance are combined with fuel economy of just 5.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of just 125 g / km, a reduction of 0.4 l/100 km and 11 g / km compared the outgoing model. Taking advantage of the long tradition of Toyota motorsport, the engine is lighter and more compact, with reduced bore and longer stroke, a factor that determines the improvement of the relationship between weight and power. It presents a cover of the cylinder head and an intake manifold in plastic material, while the suction duct is designed to optimize the air flow and improve the efficiency of combustion. The system Dual VVT-i allows to increase the levels of reactivity at all engine speeds by varying the valve timing of the intake valves and exhaust, adapting them at any time to the driving conditions. In addition to improving the engine's torque and speed to medium and low, the system helps to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.

Offering levels of efficiency, power and torque at the top of the class, Valvematic is a further development of the extraordinary Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (Dual VVT-i) for Toyota. Adding the control of the riser and amplitude to the variable timing of the intake valve to make more power with less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, Valvematic further reduces the friction and mechanical losses at low engine speeds, with benefits for consumption. Valvematic is even more efficient thanks to the adoption of an intake manifold of variable length. This, to medium-low engine speeds, maximizes the speed of air inlet for optimum combustion efficiency. At higher engine speeds, the collector has opened fully, reducing the air flow and maximize the input volume in the combustion chamber, thus the power output from the unit.

Available with 6-speed manual transmission, the 1.6 liter Valvematic develops an output of 132 hp and a maximum torque of 160 Nm at just 4.400.L 'drive ensures fuel consumption of 5.9 l/100 km in the combined cycle with CO2 emissions equal to 138 g / km, a reduction of 0.7 l/100 km and 12 g / km.

Available with 6-speed manual transmission, the 1.4 liter D-4D engine develops 90 hp and a maximum torque of 205 Nm in a range between 1,800 and 2,800 rpm. The turbo diesel 1.4 L. D-4D 90 hp draws in turn benefit from Toyota Optimal Drive technology, which maximizes performance while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions of CO2 and particulate matter. A new valve control of the lubrication system with two positions is installed inside the casing of the distribution. This allows to minimize internal friction by means of the possibility of reducing the pressure of the lubricant depending on driving conditions, through the opening and closing of the valve itself.

The heating times of the engine have been reduced thanks to the installation of a new system of "by-pass" for the liquid refrigerant that helps reduce thermal losses during starting of the vehicle. The piezo injectors new generation control more accurately the volume of fuel and timing of injection. The high reactivity of Piezo injectors enables multiple injection at higher revs, making it more efficient and effective combustion in the chamber, further reducing emissions of particulates, NOx and CO2. Benefiting from a high pressure of 160 MPa, the injectors ensures greater responsiveness of the engine, improving fuel consumption and emissions. The new unit 1.4 L. D-4D 90 hp returns combined fuel consumption equal to 4.2 l/100 km and emissions of just 109 g / km, a reduction of 0.6 l/100 km and 19 g / km compared to the previous model.

Available with 6-speed manual transmission, the 2.0 D-4D turbo diesel engine from 124 hp has been
completed and equipped as standard with Stop & Start technology. The unit has a new turbocharger, equipped with a system of low friction bearings and an electric actuator. The efficient lubrication system and improvements to the circuit include the adoption of a two-stage oil pump, equipped with a jet of cooling further improved, a new hydraulic pump, with reduced flow rate, and a new sump 'oil dual chamber, capable of improving the heating times of the engine.

Emissions are further reduced through the adoption of a new management logic of the glow plugs and the improvement in the structure and in the lining of the particle filter. The use of a plastic structure to cover the head, for the bracket for the radiator and the water hose has allowed to reduce the weight of these components of 3 kg. The fuel efficiency has been improved by reducing friction by adopting a new vacuum pump, a new timing chain and low viscosity oil. Finally, the levels of NVH from the engine have been reduced by improvements in combustion, mainly obtained thanks to the new shape of the pistons. Consequently, the engine is quieter, with new levels of torque and 19% reduction of CO2 emissions, from 138 to 112 g / km in the combined cycle. Consumption, in turn, see a decrease from 5.2 to 4.3 l/100 km.

Available as standard on diesel variants 2.0 L. D-4D, Toyota's Stop & Start system automatically stops the engine when stationary. Featuring an instant light that produces no noise or vibration, the system provides a significant reduction in CO2 emissions during urban driving, managing also to reduce fuel consumption by up to 3%, depending on driving conditions. The Stop & Start technology automatically stops the engine when the shift lever is in neutral and when the clutch pedal is released, improving fuel economy. The motor is automatically re-ignite in less than half a second new drive pedal.

The Toyota Stop & Start technology also allows continuous operation of the air conditioning system. In case of use of air conditioning, the engine will not be stopped until it reaches the desired temperature inside the passenger compartment. Once reached, the air conditioner will switch to 'ECO-run', allowing the engine to stop. The engine will automatically turn back on to issues of safety in case of a too low level of charge of the battery or of movement by the vehicle. Next to the Stop & Start system, an indicator 'ECO' lights up every automatic engine stop. ECO A counter displays the time instead of parking the vehicle is turned off during each journey, while an odometer displays the total time accumulated by the vehicle. Designed for the European market and built at the plant of Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, Toyota Auris Hybrid will allow the itself as the only manufacturer to offer a choice of 3 types of engines in the C segment The first generation of Auris Hybrid has sold over 60,000 units in 2010, the year of its launch, numbers that have made this model, the second best-selling hybrid vehicle in Europe after the Prius. The hybrid engine of the new Auris Hybrid has some refinements that further enhance the driving experience Toyota. The control logic of the gear of the planetary Hybrid Synergy Drive system has been modified to provide greater uniformity to the acceleration, with a more effective relationship between vehicle speed and engine speeds.

Able to work both independently and in combination, the petrol engine 1.8 VVT-i and the 60 kW electric Hybrid Synergy Drive ® system generates a maximum power of 136 hp, giving Auris Hybrid to accelerate from 0-100 km / h in 10.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km / h. Thanks to the improvement of aerodynamic performance and weight reduction, the level of CO2 emissions has been further, with a level below 89 g / km (with circles 15 "). In addition to this, Auris Hybrid returns a level of NOx emissions significantly lower than that of diesel vehicles performance
comparable, with the complete elimination of particulate levels.

It should be added that when Auris Hybrid extraordinary work in EV mode, an option available only on full hybrid vehicles, ensures emissions of CO2, NOx and Particulate zero, with a distance of about 2 km and speeds up to 50 km / h, depending on the level of battery charge and driving conditions. The engine of 'Auris Hybrid is designed to reduce as much as possible the operation of the engine during urban driving. Internal data collected by Toyota show that the cumulative effects of the full hybrid operation fail to provide extraordinary percentage of driving in "zero emissions." L 'Auris Hybrid benefits from a new packaging of the battery, which is located today under the rear seat, and a luggage capacity in line with the other models in the range.

As already indicated, the new Auris Hybrid is also an extraordinary economic investment. The level of CO2 emissions below 89 g / km offers customers the option of paying the fee for possession only on the thermal (99 HP instead 136cv), have permission to free travel in urban areas with limited traffic, you can park always free places blue and extraordinarily low operating costs. Auris Hybrid shares the same styling changes to the interior and exterior changes to the new Auris range.
