New Mercedes-Benz B-Class, road test

Completely renovated the new B-Class in its second generation, is a typical "Sports Tourer Mercedes." It 'a sedan minivan that offers so much space and so much dynamism. These two elements are reported by the characteristic lines of the exterior design: the front and tail dominates the studying in width, before accentuated by the wide radiator grille and the powerful headlamps that stretch up to the sides and rear by the wide rear light clusters divided into two parts and characterized by sinuous horizontal line, and the large tailgate with low loading sill. The new sporting character is evident in the side view. The bonnet flows in the front pillars, the roof line tends to spoiler. A rib shaped roof gives a line stretched to the car. The powerful wheel arches with their features elongated lines under the beltline are a sporty interpretation of the current Mercedes-Benz design.

Cx stunning for a minivan
With an outstanding drag coefficient Cx of 0.26, the new B-Class is clearly placed at the top of this segment of the market. This excellent result is due not only to the aerodynamic design of the exterior, but also to the many details optimized, for example as regards the flow of air around the front wheels, the geometry of the underbody and the conveyance of cooling air. For some details of new development, such as the serrated wheel arch spoiler was submitted patent application.

It reduces the total height, but increases cabin space
Vocation dynamics of the new B-Class is supported by the new concept of the car. The first thing that strikes you is the reduction in the height: with its 1557 millimeters, the new model is almost five centimeters lower on the road than its predecessor. The height of the seats compared to the road has decreased (- 86 mm), to facilitate access to board without compromising visibility.

Following the wishes of many customers, the sitting position Rimana high. In parallel was further increased space for the head. With a maximum size of 1,047 mm in the front seats (without sliding roof), the B-Class is ranked in this discipline among the most spacious cars in its segment. Associated with the lowering of the platform, the position of sitting higher, in addition to being ergonomic, allows rear passengers to enjoy a space for the legs (976 mm) that exceeds even the Class D and Class E and constitutes a record value in this segment. Upon request, the B-Class can be equipped with the EASY-VARIO-PLUS, which makes the cabin a few steps suitable for carrying bulky items. The system EASY-VARIO-PLUS includes, among other things, the longitudinal displacement of the rear seat up to a maximum of 140 millimeters (with which the volume of the luggage compartment increases from 488 to 666 liters) and a seat on the passenger side, whose backrest can be folded fully forward on the seat.

The interior: a new dimension of elegance
Materials refined, finely structured surfaces, details of prestige, fine finish and unprecedented spaciousness of the interior of the new Class B lead to a higher level benchmarks in the compact segment. Many equipment, previously reserved for cars of superior quality, show the special attention given by Mercedes-Benz impact and aesthetic refinement. The instrument panel, for example, is available on request in ARTICO leather with contrast stitching. Four equipment packages (Chrome Package, Sport Package, Comfort package and Night package) allow you to fully customize the car according to their personal taste.

At first glance strikes the generous cockpit molding that extends along the bridge. Four moldings available to cover the broad spectrum of contemporary style that dates back to the classic through the sporty version. Common to all versions is the impact of great prestige, which in addition to the aesthetic and tactile includes of course the ease of maintenance and a quality that is conserved in time. The three large circular vents in the center, featuring a design inspired by the cruise propeller of a jet, leading sports as their contribution to a formal language of the interior that builds on emotional. Above the vents, seemingly suspended in the air, is placed on display, which are available in two sizes (5.8 and 7 inches). The refined design, characterized by the contrast between the decorative frame with galvanized surface and the front bezel in black piano, and sleek appearance makes the color display (TFT), a real jewel in the center of the dashboard.

The three-spoke steering wheel, with the molding always in chrome silver in central spoke, the instrument cluster with four analogue round and hands in the "six o'clock" with the engine off and the seats with contrasting decorative stitching underscore the sporty character.

The engine
The new B-Class adopts both gasoline and diesel newly developed both manual and automatic transmissions as new. All powertrains are born the activity for development and are manufactured at plants in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim and Stuttgart-Hedelfingen, Rastatt (Baden), Gaggenau (Baden) and Kölleda (Thuringia). The design of engines and transmissions took place in parallel, allowing for a perfect set-up each other, as in the case of the ECO start / stop which comes as standard on all models of Class B. The new engines are all users most advanced technologies to ensure maximum efficiency, high running smoothness and great resilience even at low revs. Also meet the emission standards to be issued soon and have a low weight. The compact size of the engines, all made with turbocharging, and both fields were selected considering the installation of transverse thrusters and give to the Class B with a diameter of time, with just seven meters, is an exemplary value for a car front-wheel drive. Engine and gearbox have a support system to four points, constituted by the motor support, support of the gearbox and two supports oscillating, which ensures the maximum acoustic comfort because designed in function of the specific characteristics of these engines by high torque. The exceptional ride comfort depends crucially integrated hydraulic absorber in support of the change.

With the new four-cylinder petrol engines (internal designation M270) kicks off a series of completely new engines. The combustion process is based on the injection of direct third-generation Mercedes-Benz that was introduced last year with the V6 and V8 BlueDIRECT and now makes its entrance for the first time in the compact class. The new four cylinders have been designed both for installation and for transverse mounting in longitudinal position. For the new B-Class will initially be available with a displacement of 1.6 liters, an output of 90 kW (122 hp) in the B 180 and an output of 115 kW (156 hp) in the B 200. The maximum torque of 200 and 250 Nm respectively, is delivered at just 1250 r / min.

The new four-cylinder diesel is the evolution dell'OM651 of which are equipped cars from Class C to Class S. It is a common rail direct injection engine of the third generation, whose displacement was reduced to 1.8 liters. Optimized in many particulars, this diesel engine is mounted for the first time by Mercedes-Benz in a transverse position. The power output is 80 kW (109 hp) for model B 180 CDI and 100 kW (136 hp) in the B 200 CDI. The maximum torque of 80 kW version is 250 Nm delivered from 1,400 rpm / min, while the 100 kW version offers 300 Nm at 1,600 r / min.

Another premiere Mercedes-Benz B-Class is the new dual-clutch gearbox 7G-DCT. It has a very compact structure and thanks to seven gears fits with flexibility to engine speed. Thanks to the electric pump oil, this change is compatible with the start / stop function, executes the grafts without interruption of traction and combines the comfort of an automatic with the efficiency of a manual.

The new 6-speed manual transmission, which is also very compact and designed as a three-shaft transmission is a close relative of the DCT. Among its main features include the high comfort of graft, the ease with which shifting the gears, reduced internal friction and weight.

The chassis
The fact that the trend has increased significantly over the previous model, without compromising comfort, is mainly due to three factors: the lower center of gravity, the new four-link rear axle and the evolution of the Electronic Stability Program ESP. For a more agile behavior is also available with a sport chassis. The center of gravity lowered by a further 20 mm, the sports shock absorbers with selective damping system and the Direct-Steer system emphasize the sporty. Steering: mechanical with electric assistance The electromechanical steering of the B-Class is newly developed. The electric motor of the servo assistance in Dual Pinion EPS version is located now in perfect position, directly on the steering gear. In combination with sports package is available direct steering, in which the gear ratio becomes noticeably more direct with increasing steering angle, making it more agile and easy to handle the car. The electromechanical steering provide a substantial contribution to the overall efficiency because the power steering only consumes energy when steering actually.

The new driver assistance and braking reduces the risk of rear-end collisions
The standard Class B includes a world first in the compact segment: a collision avoidance radar system with adaptive Brake Assist can reduce the risk of a collision. The driver assistance system COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST emits visual and acoustic signals to indicate the risk of a collision the driver, if distracted, and prepares Brake Assist to brake as accurately as possible. The braking process is started as soon as the driver presses the brake pedal. Unlike other systems available in the compact class, the new Brake Assist COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST is not a mere urban system that is intended to minimize the risk of those claims minor's own traffic. On the contrary, this innovative solution designed to protect from dangerous collisions at speeds above 30 km / h. Through this new safety system Mercedes-Benz expects to exert a significantly positive impact on the scene of accidents.

These other driver assistance systems:
- ATTENTION ASSIST (standard)
- Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping
- Speed Limit Assist (recognition of road signs)
- DISTRONIC PLUS
- Automatic adaptive lights
- Park Assist
- Brake HOLD function (standard with 7G-DCT)
- Hill Start Aid with hill holder function
- LINGUATRONIC
- Reversing camera assisted

The PRE-SAFE
With the B-Class is the first time for its entry in the compact class the anticipatory occupant protection system. The central points of the system PRE SAFE pretensioners are reversible, the closure of the side windows and sliding roof when the lateral dynamics is critical and the displacement of the front passenger seat, to fully electric and provided with memory function, in a position that ensures maximum effectiveness of the restraint systems. The PRE-SAFE ® is activated normally when the longitudinal dynamics and the cross are critical, but it can also take action in case of intervention of some functions of driver assistance.

The restraint systems supplied take particular account of the vocation of the family car for the Class B For this reason, particular attention was given to safety in the rear seats. Belt tensioners, belt force limiters and height adjustment of the restraint belts are standard on the outer seats, and are available on request sidebags rear. As on the previous model, are also available integrated child seats and automatic recognition of the presence of a child seat (automatic child seat recognition). Driver and front passenger have at their disposal the new airbags for the pelvis, can protect the pelvis and the entire trunk. To protect the head there is a series of windowbags. COMAND Online multimedia system with internet access Internet access, convenient voice control system LINGUATRONIC, two navigation systems for different budgets, connection for portable audio devices and an intuitive commands: the information systems and communication of the Class B ensure comfort and extreme features that were previously reserved only for the cars to a higher category.

The COMAND Online multimedia system offers access to the Internet. Customers can freely navigate the vehicle is stationary or call up a Mercedes-Benz application, whose pages load very quickly and can easily be used while driving. Among the App integrated within the local search in Google, the weather service, Facebook and the ability to download a route previously configured on a PC using Google Maps and sent to the car.

Equipped for the future
thanks to modular "Energy Space", the new B-Class is ready to level constructive alternative fuel versions. Appropriate junction points of the body allow, on the supply versions alternatively, to modify the main section of the floor to derive a step. The floor in the double under the rear seat can thus accommodate the energy storage alternative.
