DS3 Citroen Sport Chic, Car Audio Review

Admittedly Citroen impressed us as the Citroen has given the capabilities of these ambitions. For our test, we took the DS3 Chic Sport version with 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine. Dynamism, comfort, road holding, acceleration and recovery, it is very pleasant to drive and offers outstanding custom finish. But let's look on his hi-fi and multimedia, our chosen field. Series, the DS3 Sport Chic has a laser RDS car stereo, but our trial was equipped with the Multimedia MyWay found on C3. For hi-fi, the HP system is standard on this version, and for a car of this segment, Citroën has really made it big. But first MyWay system, since the vehicle navigation is a must today!

Benefits: the essential but still lacks the iPod!

MyWay system consists of a 7-inch color screen placed at the center of the dashboard and a unit size 1 Din mounted in the center of the center console. The system is controlled by a steering wheel as a joystick with buttons in relief, positioned on the right of the steering column. This system is MyWay course with a browser with Europe maps and TMC to navigate, taking into account the real-time traffic. Pictograms direction, POI, speed alert, traffic alerts and Alternative route calculation, the system is relatively straightforward. It is, however, ignore the latest navigation features such as 3D landmarks (fun but not essential it is true). Citroen has not forgotten the communication system is equipped with Bluetooth microphone on the ceiling and download directory. The Bluetooth feature allows you to combine multiple mobile phones: useful when you are more drivers on the same car.

The navigation system is an option MyWay

For playback sources nomadic system MyWay is a bit light, it must settle for a simple mini-jack auxiliary input to connect the headphone output of any MP3 player. There exists an option Connecting Box with USB, but it is incompatible with the navigation system. The mini-jack has the merit of universality, but this requires manipulating the iPod by hand to choose the music: not practical while driving. It also criticized the system MyWay to ignore the video, as the source drive simply does not offer CD and DVD playback. Citroen has not even made an audio / video entertainment system as on the Peugeot. Too bad, because the video is still nice to relax during the trip poses. The rest are classic features: RDS, auto store, list of radio stations received, read MP3 CDs, displaying the securities if the CDs are "tagged", and even a small equalizer with preset sound environments (rock, jazz, ...).

The latter provides a nice contrast in hi-fi series. Indeed, the DS3 Sport Chic offers 5.1 sound in its beautiful interior. The front channels are equipped with a kit with two separate channels set up woofers placed doors and tweeters in the dash. At the center of the table, we find a center channel to provide better sound image, which is rare on cars segment.

The rear channels are content to high-range drivers, which is amply sufficient to recall the sound, the most important being the way forward for a good listener. Everything is controlled by an adequate amplification, whose power has not been disclosed. We can therefore speak only our impressions of listening to his case.

Discover and use: a center channel present too!

For once, let us begin by listening before tackling the multimedia system because it is really a pleasant surprise this DS3, even if there are things to criticize him. First observation, the DS3 has been a very good soundproofing and acoustic treatment: low noise engine (the 1.6 turbo sings well in the towers, but knows how to be discreet), little road noise, ... The comfort of the car is especially remarkable in this category. This will therefore enable to enjoy music. To the ear, the sound is dynamic, well stamped and provides a good in bass. Surprising even for a series case is not big (like what!) Because it offers a serious firm and clear. Bass is well ahead, you do not feel it came from. We note again that good sound and quality of materials, for high-volume listening, it receives no vibration noise. In fact, it has a small anyway, we think it's the rear that vibrates on its shelves (small rubber pads would overcome the problem). Of course, this is not the grave of a large subwoofer 38 cm, but to listen to music every day with great pleasure, it is enough. The box also works well even on techno.

The center channel offers a definite plus listening. The sound is high and the voices are at the center. However, this lack of sound image width. The fault lies in the center lane that is too present. Like most facilities of origin which comprises one, there is no volume control for the center channel. Too bad, because it tends to stifle a little stereo effect to music specific instruments. The tweeters are not very well placed, it would be more of the ends of the dashboard or better in the upright windshield. And they lack a little finesse. The best course would be to change to incorporate high-end amounts windshield.

A good in bass!

From a dynamic point of view, the original amp is good. The attacks are quite frank and the amp just waiting to give way, if asked. To do saturate, you really push the volume up. In short, for an original installation, it is rather attractive, especially at this price. She certainly has flaws, but they are fixable with aftermarket products for most enthusiasts. In our opinion, the most important point to note is the acoustical treatment of the car, it's rare that automobile manufacturers to make such an effort in this car segment.

The tweeters lack finesse and are somewhat masked by the central route

Now see the media source. The screen is very well placed and falls well within the field of vision without too look away. It offers a beautiful display quality, but what a pity it is not tactile. It would have been much more convenient. When we usually handsets double din aftermarket, we tend instinctively to stretch his finger on the screen. The DS3 is wanting modern, Citroen could have put a touch screen. The system is controlled by buttons on the unit and the steering wheel. The joystick, however, is very effective in controlling the system. We prefer that the buttons on the steering wheel. Joystick Citroen falls naturally under the fingers and raised keys used to see what you're doing without looking, once they have been learned. In fact, it falls under the fingers like a stalk (wipers for example), without moving the hand from the steering wheel, while flying on many keys are misplaced. This joystick is often criticized, but it remains our most practical sense, not the touch screen of course.

The browser uses a mapping on SD card is slower and a little outdated compared to flash memory. However, the browser is still quick with the ignition (no long waiting times), and rapid in its route calculations. The functions are standard and complete enough even if we did not have the latest developments as PND Live services. The interface is relatively intuitive and is easily programmed destination. Still, turn the dial to enter the address is far from the practical side of the touchscreen. For the rest, nothing to report, the browser is accurate and the TMC works very well to keep you informed of traffic conditions. While not the top, the browser is satisfactory.

For CD player and radio tuner, nothing special to report. The tuner provides a very good reception and radio shows as a list, to easily make its selection. The CD is classic with a display of titles and playlist manager MP3. The sound quality is good and will fill a large majority, even if the performances do not match that of an audiophile turntable.

In conclusion: 

Except that we fall in love on the DS3, what is the result of this installation? For hi-fi, it is very difficult to complain, since the system is standard on the Sport Chic, and costs only 400 Euros on the other versions. When listening, you really value for money. It is just unfortunate that the tweeters are not best placed and the center channel has no level adjustment. By cons, we particularly appreciate the soundproofing of the car and visited the grave. Not enough to make the big "boom boom", but for music, the subwoofer is very valuable. Say that the facility needs to be improved by changing the tweeters by top models and seeking another position.

The lack of touchscreen is the biggest flaw of the system MyWay

MyWay for the system, we are less enthusiastic. Chic on the Sport version, its price is content: 950 Euros. But at this price, we have a double din top multimedia (DVD, iPod, touch screen, ...) in the major Japanese brands of car stereos. Moreover, on the other versions of DS3, the price is much higher, and there by cons, it's true too expensive because the system lacks multimedia functionality. The lack of iPod control and touch screen are the biggest flaws of this system. Afterwards, there is always the solution on the market in the aftermarket, OEM interfaces to add multimedia features (inputs for DVD and Freeview, iPod control). The DS3 is a little too recent for the moment, but brands like Paser or Mobridge will surely look into his case. Also note another important fact when choosing the car, the system is incompatible with MyWay dashboards yellow and red, but in carbon Sport Chic, it's so class that we will not complain. In short, the system is not perfect, especially in multimedia, but for a car price segment, Citroën's efforts are undeniable, particularly in the sound and soundproofing. The most passionate of us can improve the system, but one thing is sure, the DS3 will give cold sweats to rival brand hat with chevrons!
