Polk Audio Amplifier PA660 Test

Well known for its home speakers and iPod docks for show, the American brand Polk Audio also has a fine range of amps and speakers for cars. Polk Audio has particularly distinguished design in its partnership with the props Momo. In some country, Polk Audio is best known for its high-end HP, but the brand also offers affordable products like this amp PA660!

Good benefits!

Polk Audio amps have always presented a very simple designs, the PA660 really no exception to the rule. With his connections and his concealed hood in black brushed aluminum, this amp offers a certain elegance. In place of the logo etched in the ground, the young clientele would surely prefer a bright logo, but we like that aspect discreet. And then, the PA660 has a compact size, it will often hide in the trunk, then ... However, benefits issue, the PA660 has been rather well armed!

Benefits: good flexibility of use!

From architecture point of view, this amp is very classic frame with small side fins for cooling, controls and settings on a blank on the other terminal. The screw terminals accept BTR directly from big cable. Inside, the PA660 has a conventional electronic and carefully assembled. Having high and low level inputs, this amplifier is compatible with all radios, including original sources. For better functionality, each pair of channels has an active filter and a corrector of serious acting at 42 Hz, of course, the gain control is separate for front and rear. It also has an input mode 2 or 4 channels.

Each channel pair has its crossover

To facilitate all types of HP, the PA660 is fairly well designed. It is of course stable and bridgeable into 2 Ohms. The front (1 & 2) have an adjustable crossover broadband or high-pass, therefore ideal to host a kit broke. The rear channels (3 & 4) have an active filter high pass, low pass or broadband. In both cases, the filter is adjustable from 50 to 500 Hz can thus amplify a kit and broke a pair of coaxial, or a kit broke and a subwoofer.

Discover and use: a lively and pleasant sound!

From a performance standpoint, this amplifier develops 4x75 Watts RMS into 4 ohms. In bridge mode, power is 2x150 watts RMS into 4 ohms. This Power Standard CEA 2006, therefore, true power. Bandwidth, distortion, reasonable power is obtained under the proper conditions. To animate the HP Classic, it is amply sufficient, but to feed a subwoofer channel, it is a fair bit (at least for large subs). May be considered to facilitate a system with serious rear channels, but rather for a small subwoofer 20 cm.

Relatively compact, the PA660 will fit easily one corner of the trunk

Listening to this amp is alive and shows pretty well stamped. His listening is pleasant and rather warm, the attacks are good, but it lacks a bit of momentum. We must ask if we really want to listen very hard. It's not very troublesome in the absolute to listen to music everyday, but for lovers of big sound, it lacks some dynamics. Note also a slight lack of finesse for discerning music lovers. Anyway, the overall listening is balanced and suitable for all types of music, enough to satisfy a large majority!

The notice

Situated less than 300 Euros, the PA660 offers good value for money. The PA660 is relatively compact and will fit well in the car. Its construction is serious, and above all it offers good flexibility. Its sound quality and power are adequate to achieve a nice facility and fully enjoy music every day with more energy than a car. For lovers of big sound, he missed a bit of dynamism. For a hi-fi, we would have preferred that each pair of channels has a different power in order to have more watts for a subwoofer channel. But at that price, it is still fun, because listening is pleasant. Listen pleasing, functionality, price is a good amp to achieve a mid-range installation!

As usual with Polk Audio, manufacturing is neat
